Investigating the Marine Environment in the 21st Century
Authors: Dr. Violetta F. Lien Length: 830 pages
Price: $20.00
Grades 7-8. This 13-part follow-up to Dr. Lien's widely used Investigating the Marine Environment and Its Resources will fill the current void in available marine education materials. Activities are designed to help students become more knowledgeable about the marine environment and its resources through emphasis on the Texas coastal zone and the Gulf of Mexico. The activities are designed for both traditional and integrated science courses, but also provide marine activities for social studies, language arts and mathematics courses or for interdisciplinary thematic units. The book provides current, in-depth information for classroom use and is correlated to the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills in science, mathematics, social studies and language arts. It also meets national standards in these fields. Being a resource manual for teachers, this book contains many more activities than a teacher can use in a year. Each teacher is encouraged to select those activities most applicable to the individual's objectives. Although the book is designed for middle school, the activities can be adapted and incorporated into upper elementary and high school classes as well. This marine resource manual not only contributes to teachers' and students' knowledge of the marine environment but also to skills that are needed. Process skills, higher-order thinking, sound reasoning, problem-solving, interactive communication skills and inquiry are stressed. While providing activities that can be used to develop these skills with guidance, the teacher is the key to the use of the activities. The activities are not worksheets or cookbook laboratory activities but rather are guides to inquiry or problem solving. Teachers can use the questions as a guide to facilitate the students' thinking and problem-solving skills through discussions, activities, projects and presentations. Teachers can use this book as a resource to take students on a voyage to Earth's final frontier and to facilitate their becoming marine "literate" and developing skills for the 21st century.

Sharing Our Gulf: A Challenge for Us All Conference Proceedings
Year Published: 1999
http://nsgl.gso.uri.edu/tamu/tamuw98001/tamuw98001index.html
Price: $20.00
Scientists, policymakers and interested citizens and students joined for a series of discussions about the Gulf of Mexico and its future. As coastal populations continue to swell, the Gulf is coming under increasing pressure. People rely on its waters for income, food, recreation and commerce. Inevitably, the different constituents using the Gulf come into conflict. This conference invited marine experts and resource users to offer their opinions of some of the most pressing issues facing the Gulf of Mexico, including pollution and hypoxia, beach trash, marine education, sea turtles and the fisheries. This book was assembled not only as a record of the conference but also as a valuable resource to anyone interested in the Gulf of Mexico and the problems it faces.

These Dunes Aren't Made for Walking
Length: Poster. 15" x 11"
Price: $0.00
Grades K-12. This poster teaches the importance of dune life on the beach, stressing that although dune plants tolerate harsh beach conditions - wind, salt spray, overwash of waves, scarce nutrients, limited freshwater, intense sunlight, and extremes of hot and cold - they cannot withstand the pounding of feet and vehicles. A Guide to Planting Seagrasses in the Gulf of Mexico
Price: $0.00
Grades 10-12. Seagrasses form one of the most productive plant communities on the planet. They provide valuable and virtually irreplaceable habitat for numerous recreational and commercial fishery organisms as well as their prey. Tremendous losses of this habitat have occurred in the Gulf of Mexico as a result of coastal development. Losses to seagrass habitat may be slowed or even reversed through properly planned and executed planting projects. This handbook was developed to guide agency personnel and private consultants involved in wetland permitting, mitigation and restoration through successful completion of these projects. 28pp., 6 color photographs, 6 illustrations. Single copies free.

Bird Island Basin Environmental Study Area
Length: 36pp.
http://nsgl.gso.uri.edu/tamu/tamuh85002.pdf
Price: $2.00
Grades 7-12. The concept of environmental study areas was a direct outgrowth of the 1970s ecology movement. The idea was to designate specific areas where school groups, youth groups or others could enjoy a directed study experience in the field and where specific ecological principles could be demonstrated. The Bird Island Environmental Study Area, located at Padre Island National Seashore, is just such a place. This guide contains a number of exercises that are designed as points of departure for hands-on learning experiences. Most of the activities are presented in a format similar to high school-level laboratory experiments. Although written with the Bird Island Basin area in mind, they can easily be adapted to other environments. Many of the activities can be done on the school lawn, on the playground or in a nearby park.
