Research
Texas Sea Grant awards about $800,000 every year to the best marine researchers in the state. The projects must fit within one of the program’s three research priorities — sustainable coastal communities and economies, coastal ecosystems and habitats, and marine education — with an emphasis on results that have practical, real-world applications.
Between 50 and 60 proposals are typically submitted for each two-year funding cycle. After two rounds of peer review, generally fewer than 10 are selected for approval, with the number limited only by funds available.
The current funding cycle continues through January 2010. Renewal for funding in the second year of each project is dependent upon significant progress being made in the first year.
2010-2012 Omnibus Proposal
Texas Sea Grant is in the process of selecting Texas coastal and marine research projects to include in its 2010-2012 Omnibus Proposal for federal funding.
Principal Investigators, project titles and abstracts.
Texas Sea Grant sometimes has funding available to sponsor small, short-term projects that may not have been foreseen during the approval process for the two-year grants. These mini-grants allow the program to respond quickly to problems or opportunities in which a small amount of funding can leverage significant results, including larger research studies in the future.
Texas Sea Grant is a member of the Gulf of Mexico Alliance. The Alliance's effort to increase regional partnerships to enhance the ecological and economic health of the Gulf of Mexico includes a number of collaborative research projects.
Texas Sea Grant hosts a conference each fall to give investigators of its funded research projects an opportunity to share their findings with colleagues in disciplines related to marine and coastal research and with their peers at state natural resource agencies. The conference is held on a rotating basis in College Station, Galveston or the Coastal Bend.
