TEXAS SHRIMP FARMING

This short course is a cooperative effort between The Texas A&M University System (Texas Sea Grant College Program, Texas Cooperative Extension and Texas Agricultural Experiment Station) and The University of Texas at Austin (Marine Science Institute). It is designed to give both in-depth technical information and practical, hands-on training in the latest techniques of culturing penaeid shrimp.

PARTICIPANTS
This short course is designed for individuals who are actively involved in shrimp farming as well as for potential aquaculture entrepreneurs and investors who are considering opportunities in the commercial culture of shrimp.
Others who might be interested in the course include bank personnel needing more information on the business potential, individuals considering a career in aquaculture and researchers interested in the practical aspects of raising shrimp.
CURRICULUM
Participants will have the opportunity to obtain state-of-the-art information about shrimp mariculture during morning presentations and some afternoon sessions. The morning sessions will last from 8:30 a.m. until noon, with ample time for questions and individual attention.
There will also be some afternoon lectures when the group is not traveling.
Field trips to a commercial processing plant and growout farm will provide additional opportunities for hands-on learning.
The course will be taught by internationally experienced instructors with commercial, research and extension backgrounds, and is expected to include the following topics:
Pond design and construction, hatchery design, maturation and spawning technology, larval rearing.
Nursery techniques, management alternatives for growout, inland shrimp farming.
Diseases, processing, marketing, shrimp nutrition, partial harvesting.
Economics and feasibility analysis demonstration.

Joe M. Fox, Ph.D. — associate professor, Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi with 27 years aquaculture, shrimp farm and hatchery experience (engineering, conceptual design, feasibility instructor).
Kenneth W. Hasson, Ph.D — aquatic animal disease specialist at the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at Texas A&M University (shrimp disease instructor).
Joan Holt, Ph.D. — professor, University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI mariculture lab tour instructor).
Jeff Kaiser, M.S. — research scientist associate, University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI mariculture lab tour instructor).
Addison L. Lawrence, Ph.D. — professor, Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences at Texas A&M University (nutrition instructor).
Russ Miget, Ph.D. — environmental specialist for Texas Cooperative Extension and Texas Sea Grant, Corpus Christi (shrimp processing).
Tzachi Samocha, Ph.D. — professor at Texas A&M University—Corpus Christi (bait shrimp systems and zero water exchange instructor and tour guide).
Granvil Treece, M.S. — aquaculture specialist for the Texas Sea Grant College Program Marine Advisory Service, 29 years' experience in shrimp culture, three years as a commercial shrimp hatchery manager (conducting the course).
Dr. Patricia Varner, Ph.D. — aquatic animal disease specialist at the Texas Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory at Texas A&M University (shrimp disease instructor).
